The butter wafers used to be a typical new-years-gift in Flanders. In fact every family used to bake its own butter waffles. This tradition dates from the 17th century. Nowadays the butter crisps are being enjoyed the whole year round and have become typical Belgian speciality. The actual shape of this biscuit has been designed by Jules Destrooper purveyor to the Belgian Royal Household.
